AI and Responsible Finance: a dialogue with the University of Oxford

The partnership between Intesa Sanpaolo’s IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division and the University of Oxford continues, with the aim of fostering research and an ongoing dialogue on the major transformations shaping the global economy. Within this framework, the two institutions have collaborated on a study examining the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and its social and financial implications.

The study, “The role of humans in a world of AI”, published on Oxford Answers, the editorial platform of Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and authored by Rupert Younger, Director of the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation, and Carissa Véliz, Associate Professor in Philosophy at the Institute for Ethics in AI, explores the growing centrality of AI in business and decision-making processes. It highlights the need to preserve fundamental aspects of human contribution, such as judgement, ethics and accountability, ensuring they are not sacrificed in the pursuit of efficiency and speed.

In this context, Mauro Micillo, Chief of IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division, brings his perspective to the discussion through the article “Governing AI in financial services: Threats and opportunities, which explores the opportunities and challenges AI introduces in the financial sector, while highlighting the importance of robust governance and responsible implementation.

Together, the two contributions emphasise the tangible benefits of artificial intelligence and offer complementary perspectives on how to guide its development, keeping people and responsibility at the heart of innovation.
