Study on the future of the European electricity system

The study dedicated to the Capex investment strategy for the European electricity system, which was elaborated by the IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division, together with the Chief Sustainability Officer area, of Intesa Sanpaolo, presented in December at the European Parliament and in January at the Politecnico di Torino, highlights how the evolution of the European electricity system is converging towards a model dominated by fixed costs: grids, renewables, and batteries require significant initial investments, while the percentage of fuel costs on the total becomes marginal. In this scenario, stimulating flexible demand, for example through the electrification of industrial process heat with storage and V2G-enabled electric cars, will be of vital importance, as demonstrated by the evidence from the simulations developed by Afry in the Report.
