The IT services sector between challenges and growth opportunities

Despite the progress made in the IT and Digital sector, Italy is still lagging behind compared to other European countries. According to the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) of the European Commission, which monitors the digital performance of economic systems, our country ranks 18th among the EU Member States, below the EU average, especially factoring in the strong delay in terms of human capital. In order to aid the acceleration of the development of this key sector of the economy, Intesa Sanpaolo organised a virtual event at the end of February 2023, where international and Italian investors met 12 national excellences from the IT and Digital world.

The IT services sector is a diverse environment, which includes software producers and developers, companies specialising in data analysis and processing, players operating in advisory services, but also those who manage IT structures or create content on the web. The most recent data on the evolution of IT services show how, after showing greater resilience in 2020, the sector recorded a significant acceleration in the 2021-2022 two-year period thanks to the driving force of the demand for digitisation which impacted the different areas of the economic system, supported by funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and the Transition 4.0 plan. The sector's outlook is positive in the next two years, albeit with a less intense growth rate than in the recent past. However, the development of the sector will be affected by the full implementation of the investments planned in the NRRP, which will also require qualified human capital, a key element for the sector's growth and one with which Italy appears to be struggling.
